My last visit to Mallory was in April 2011, it was a warm and sunny weekend, I had taken tuition from Mike “Get Faster” Dickinson and in race two posted my first sub 1 minute lap with a time of 59.80 Sec’s.

So a sunny but cold February day, over 3 months off the bike, a fast group that is fully subscribed with a rare mix of talent, perhaps could be an excuse for a slightly more gentile start to 2012, add to that some used tyres, a new clutch to break in and the excuses can roll on and on…..

Don't be fooled by the appearance, this is a race bike in disguise !!!

An early start bags a garage space and more importantly a plug socket and a shelter from the bitter wind. 09.00hrs is the first call, no timing just want to get a feel for riding again after a long winter lay off, give the bike a shakedown having had the engine in bits for over a month and back together for less than a week and test out the feel of my new Sigma.

First impressions WOW ! two quick down shifts and not a grumble of complaint the Sigma gathers it all up and sorts it all out, it’s truly amazing. Mallory has a super fast entry into Gerard’s and a rapid decrease in speed entering Shaw’s both super tests for the Sigma and I’m not sure the Sigma cared or even knew I was testing it! Even with the rear wheel hopping and skipping under breaking, everything just worked and worked well.

The day was cheap and I only planned to spend the morning as my 14 year pit monkey (Olly), I think, was bored before we even arrived! However due to an amazing number of people that made the choice to test out their crash protection and leathers after only 3 sessions lunch was called.

After lunch I decided to switch on the Starlane and try out the GoPro. I guess at this juncture a note of thanks, Froggy, who gave up his spot so I could get on circuit and reminded me of the line into Gerard’s, Mike Dickinson who through 1-2-1’s last year showed me how to get around the circuit and Oliver for giving up his day so that I
could go play.

So how was it, on that cold February day after the winter lay off with the excuse bag full of reasons to go slow, 59.63 second’tastic and a new PB.

I now head off to Brands confident of my lap times, confident of the bike and ready for the challenge, the GoPro footage is visually great (something amiss with the sound) and demonstrated that if I had actually listened to Mike and Froggy and taken the correct line into Gerard’s I could have gone faster and in the race I will, but for the day, for early testing and on a busy mixed talent track day, beating my
PB is a great start to the new season.

Brands Hatch 10th 11th March, let’s hope for a dry pleasant day and some great racing……….
