- I have wanted to try punch needle embroidery, as it intrigues me, but most of the projects I’ve seen in ‘beginner kits’ are either too weird or too cutesy. And I have no use for coasters. I’d rather make something I can actually use.This tote bag seemed like a great idea, and I do like the design. It arrived, and I was too intimidated to even open it. Finally, I broke down and did so.The tote bag is a little smaller than advertised. I measured it at 23 cm tall, 22 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. That is only 1-3 cm difference, but on such a small bag, it is still significant. It will still work fine for my purposes. I plan to use it a a project bag for hats or washcloths, which is my “in car” project that I keep there for emergency knitting purposes. In other words, a project I have available whenever I end up unexpectedly waiting somewhere. I donate these to a mission in town as I finish them. I need another bag for the other vehicle, as right now, I’m using a plastic shopping bag. This will be the perfect size for washcloths or the right hat project.Anyway, back to this kit. I pulled all the materials out, and found a double sided, glossy page that included QR codes for an online manual (in Google Docs) and one for an online video. The other side includes a photo of the completed pattern. I would have liked printed instructions, but at least there is the reference photo.The manual seemed fairly helpful, but I think watching the video was better. As long as you can get past the language. There were certain parts of the verbal instruction that I never did actually figure out what she meant, something about rubbing your burger?? I have no clue.But watching the video was helpful. I was able to get my little punching tool threaded right away, and with a couple false starts, was off actually doing the embroidery.The smaller yarn skeins (black and grey) are both wound up weird, so it was a little frustrating to get those started. Basically, you need to untie them.It seems there is a good amount of yarn, so you can mess up and not risk being unable to complete the project. I have not completed it yet, but based on what I have done, that is my expectation.I was a little confused about the one tool included and totally couldn’t figure it out. I don’t think it was mentioned in either the online manual or the video (I could have missed it in the video though, as I was working on my project while watching the video, so I didn’t see everything). I looked through this listing on Amazon, and didn’t see anything either, but in the video included in the listing, you can see it being used. It’s a pen. Seriously. I feel a bit idiotic for not figuring that out.One recommendation in the video is to put a cardboard box inside the tote bag while working on it. And there is the suggestion to coat the back with glue or some other finishing ideas. I’m not sure what I’ll do about that yet, and nothing is included for doing so.I would not recommend this as a starter kit for most children. Crafty teens could probably handle it. I think it is a bit awkward working in the bag, so a learning project that is flat would probably be better for everyone, but certainly for kids.
